You have laced up, headed out and got the run done. Now comes the part most of us skip: recovery.
As autumn settles in, that matters more. The mornings are darker, the evenings are drawing in, and once the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, many of us will start or finish our runs in the dark. Cooler air, tired legs and a rush to get warm can make it tempting to stop dead, head inside and move on.
Recovery is part of the training. A few simple habits after each run help you feel better for the next one. Here is your seven-step checklist, created with our friends at Sea Magik. Save it for your next post-run routine.
1. Cool down: don't just stop
Take five to ten minutes to walk it out after your run and let your heart rate come down gradually. A little movement helps you shift from go mode to recovery mode.
In the darker months, that cool-down often happens on the same roads you have just run, with traffic around you. Keep your reflective layer on until you are through the door. Your run might be finished, but you still need to be seen.
2. Rehydrate: water first
You have put the work in. Now replace those fluids. Keep a bottle handy and make rehydration a regular part of your post-run routine.
Cooler weather can make you feel less thirsty, but you still lose fluid when you run. Drinking on the go makes it easier.
Proviz pick: the REFLECT360 Running Hydration LED Vest carries your fluids with visibility built in for darker runs.
3. Refuel: feed the recovery
After a run, give your body the fuel it needs. Think carbs, protein and plenty of fluids to help replenish your energy and support your body after exercise.

If you run early before work or late after it, plan ahead. Keep something simple ready so you are not reaching for whatever is closest when you get in.
4. Bath time: run done, bath on

On a cold, dark evening, few things beat a warm bath. Add Sea Magik Epsom Spa Salts and take some well-earned time to relax. Sea Magik designs its Epsom Spa Salts to soothe tired muscles and aid post-workout recovery.
5. Stretch and mobilise: move, don't force it
A few gentle stretches or mobility exercises are a great way to wind down after a run. Focus on how your body feels. Recovery does not need to be another workout.
Muscles can feel tighter in cold weather, so ease in slowly and keep things comfortable.
6. Get cosy: recovery mode on
Fresh kit. Warm layers. Feet up.
When the temperature drops, getting warm quickly after your run feels even better. Our REFLECT360 Explorer Fleece-Lined Headband keeps you cosy after chilly morning or evening runs, and its reflective finish means it works on the run too.
7. Sleep: the most underrated recovery tool
Give your body time to rest and recharge before your next run. You do not have to run every day to become a better runner.
Darker evenings can be a helpful cue to wind down earlier. Use them to your advantage.
Run well. Recover well. Get back out there.
Darker days do not have to mean fewer runs. With a simple recovery routine and kit that keeps you visible from your first step to your front door, you can keep enjoying your running right through winter.
