Summer's over, the last of the holiday treats are gone, and the mornings have that crisp edge back to them. If you commuted by bike before the break and let it slide over summer, autumn is the easiest time to pick it back up — and one of the better excuses you'll get all year.
More refreshing than a double espresso
There's a specific kind of alert that only a cold morning ride gives you. No queue, no waiting for the kettle, no 3pm crash — just cold air, moving legs, and a proper wake-up before you've even sat down at your desk. If your commute's been a coffee-and-scroll routine over summer, this is the reset.
And it pays for itself before Christmas
Beyond the wake-up call, there's a quieter benefit: every commute you cycle instead of drive or take the train is money back in your pocket. Fuel, parking, fares — it adds up fast over a few months, and autumn to Christmas is exactly the stretch where that saved cash tends to matter most.
The one thing that changes in Autumn: you need to be seen
Here's the catch. As the clocks go back, a lot of commutes shift from daylight to dusk or dark almost overnight — even if your route and your fitness haven't changed at all. It's the single biggest safety shift in the cycling calendar, and it catches out even experienced commuters who were riding home in broad daylight just weeks earlier.
The fix isn't complicated. It's making sure your kit is doing its job — not assuming last year's setup still covers you.
Refresh your kit for autumn
| Product | Why it works for autumn commuting |
|---|---|
| LED360 Chest Light | 500 lumens, visible from 100m+. Chest-mounted, so it moves with you — a different angle of visibility than a bike-mounted light alone. USB rechargeable, 3hr runtime, IPX4 waterproof. |
| Fully Reflective Cycling & Commuting 30L Backpack | Built specifically to solve a problem most riders don't think about: a non-reflective bag sitting over a reflective jacket blocks the very panels doing the work. |
| Fully Reflective 20L Backpack | Same fix, smaller size — for anyone who doesn't need the 30L capacity. |
|
Reflective Active Gilet |
A lighter layering option for days that don't need a full jacket yet — still keeps you visible without the extra bulk. |
A couple of extras worth adding
Not everything needs to come from us — a couple of small additions make a real difference to an autumn commute:
- Clip-on mudguards — autumn brings the wet mornings back. A cheap set of clip-on guards keeps the road spray off your back and out of your face, no bike modification needed.
- A spare rear light for your bag or helmet — a backup light means one dead battery doesn't leave you unlit on the ride home.
Getting back into it
If it's been a few months, ease back in rather than trying to match your pre-summer pace on day one. The point of a refreshed kit is that you can trust it and focus on the ride — not on whether you're visible.
