Hi-Viz vs Reflective Jackets: Why Every Cyclist Needs Both

Hi-Viz vs Reflective Jackets: Why Every Cyclist Needs Both

The Builder's Vest Problem

Most cyclists start in the same place: a cheap fluorescent vest, picked up for a few pounds and thrown over whatever jacket is to hand. It's bright, it's easy, and on a sunny morning it does a good job.

Then October arrives. On Sunday 25 October the clocks go back, and the ride home moves into the dark almost overnight. That vest still looks bright when you put it on in the hallway. Out on an unlit road, in a driver's headlights, it's a very different story.

Here's what most riders don't know: the thing that makes hi-viz bright stops working once the sun goes down. To stay seen all year, you need two jackets for two jobs.

How Hi-Viz Works, and When It Stops

Fluorescent fabric absorbs ultraviolet light from the sun and gives it back as visible light. That's why fluorescent yellow seems to glow on a grey afternoon: it looks brighter than everything around it.

That makes hi-viz the right choice in daylight, especially in dull, overcast or misty conditions when other colours fade into the background.

The catch is the source. Fluorescence needs UV, and UV comes from daylight. After dark, car headlights don't trigger that glow. A fluorescent vest in headlights is simply a pale-coloured garment, and drivers see far less of you than you'd expect.

How Reflective Works After Dark

Reflective fabric works differently. It's packed with tiny glass beads that bounce light straight back to where it came from. When headlights hit a reflective jacket, the light returns towards the driver's eyes, and you light up.

That's why reflective is the material that matters at night. It doesn't need daylight. It turns every passing car's headlights into your own spotlight.

Coverage matters too. Most budget vests carry a couple of reflective strips, so after dark a driver sees a few bright lines. Proviz REFLECT360 fabric is reflective across the whole garment, so drivers see the full outline of a rider, and a shape they recognise straight away is one they react to sooner.

One thing reflective can't do is replace your lights. UK law requires a white front light and red rear light after dark, plus a red rear reflector and pedal reflectors. Reflective clothing makes you more visible on top of them.

One of Each: The Day Kit, Night Kit Rule

Hi-viz and reflective aren't competitors. They do different jobs, and the simplest way to stay seen all year is to own one of each.

Conditions

What works best

Why

Bright or overcast daylight

Hi-viz

Fluorescent colour stands out against grey skies and busy streets

Dawn and dusk

Both

Light is fading, so fluorescent colour and reflective return both help

After dark, lit or unlit roads

Reflective

Headlights bounce straight back to the driver

Rain and spray

Reflective, waterproof

Wet roads and windscreens cut visibility, and you need to stay dry

Mild weather, daytime riding

The darker months add a second dark commute too. From late autumn, sunrise comes later, so many riders set off in the dark as well as coming home in it. A reflective jacket covers both ends of the day.

The timing matters. Mid-October, before the clocks change, is the moment to add a reflective jacket to your kit, so it's ready for your first dark ride home rather than bought after it.

Finding Your Jacket in the Proviz Range

Every rider is different, so here's the range grouped by how you ride. Find your row, and you've found your jacket.

For avid cyclists: Apex and City

If you ride most days, in all weathers, you need a jacket that performs as hard as you do. The Apex and City jackets are our premium choice. Both use REFLECT360 fabric for full-body reflectivity after dark, built for riders who want visibility without compromising on performance.

Best-value reflective: the Active Jacket

New to riding in the dark, or adding a night jacket to your kit for the first time? The Active Jacket is the perfect affordable reflective option. It does the job that matters most when the light goes: getting you seen in headlights.

For milder days: hi-viz and reflective hybrids

Not every autumn ride needs a heavy jacket. Our hybrids combine hi-viz colour for daylight with reflective detail for when the light fades, ideal for milder weather and daytime cycling.

One jacket, both jobs: the Switch

Don't want to own two jackets? The Switch Men's Reversible Cycling Jacket is one of our most popular designs for exactly that reason. Its reversible design gives you day and night visibility in a single jacket: flip it to suit the light.

Ready for the Dark Evenings

Keep your hi-viz for bright days. Add a reflective jacket for everything after them. Our best-selling jackets are certified to EN ISO 20471, the recognised standard for high-visibility clothing, so you know the visibility is tested, not guessed.

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October. Get your night kit sorted before your first dark ride home.
